South West LSP Community Victims & Survivors Initiative

The Fermanagh, Omagh and Strabane Local Strategy Partnerships have been working closely with the Sperrin Lakeland Health & Social Care Trust in a unique partnership since June 2002.

This partnership – The South West LSP Community Victims & Survivors Initiative – has been looking at ways to promote and facilitate a purposeful response to the needs of those in our communities who have been affected in any way by the conflict in Northern Ireland which so tragically characterised our recent history.

One of the most critical outcomes of the Initiative is the publication of this standards manual for counselling, listening-ear and befriending services. We are particularly pleased that the Initiative took on the challenge of devising these standards which will be a great asset to the work of our four organisations in purposefully addressing the legacy of the past with the view to contributing to a better future. We also believe that this manual will be welcomed further afield throughout Northern Ireland and we are aware that interest in these standards has been expressed from abroad including South Africa and some of the Balkan States.

We are conscious that a great deal of time and effort has been spent in ensuring that the standards are as comprehensive as possible. The contents will be reviewed periodically and there is an opportunity at the end of each section for people to make further comments, observations, etc.

Funding for the Initiative has been allocated under Measure 6.2b of the EU Programme for Peace & Reconciliation.

Cross Border Opportunities

Fermanagh Local Strategy Partnership together with Leitrim County Development Board has been successful in securing funding from ADM/CPA through the INTERREG IIIA Programme to establish a Cross Border Opportunities Project.

Project Outcomes:

Increased awareness
The work that will be carried out by the Development Officer will increase awareness of opportunities that now exist for cross border activity and of opportunities to forge partnerships and working relationships of a cross border nature.

Increased Knowledge
Through the work of the project there will be a significant increase in knowledge of many community groups, individuals and agencies on the work and activities that occur on a cross border basis and indeed on parallel agencies and organisations that exists on the other side of the border.

Increased opportunities
Through the work of the project both by building awareness and the dissimilation of information and the building of knowledge in regard to the subject matter of the project, the opportunities for the target groups and agencies will be greatly enhanced. Any agency, group or individual targeted by the project will have available to them increased awareness, increased knowledge and a Development Officer who will be there to support and liaise with them in the early stages of their project development.

Closer links between the partners
The work of the management committee for the project will result, amongst other things, in the development in a closer relationship between Fermanagh LSP and County Leitrim CDB as well as Leitrim County Council. This will enable the two counties to further develop projects in the future and will be an important aspect of the project.

Development of new projects
The project will result in a number of new partnerships being developed between agencies and groups including some that result in actual projects.
