THE NATURAL RESOURCE RURAL TOURISM (NRRTI) is a special initiative within
the PEACE II Programme designed to help disadvantaged rural communities
maximise the opportunities for tourism development arising from Peace, by
utilising previously untapped natural and cultural resources in a sustainable
manner.
Fermanagh Local Strategy Partnership, was selected by Department of Agriculture
and Rural Development (DARD) and its partners, The Environment and Heritage
Service (EHS) and Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) to deliver the NRRT
Initiative in County Fermanagh.
Fermanagh LSP has £2.8 million to distribute to tourism projects between
2003 and December 2006. The funding has been allocated to eight different
priority themes; these include The Water Based Programme, The Land Based
Programme, The Accommodation Programme, The Marketing Programme, The Heritage
and Culture Programme, The Events Programme, The Other and Innovative Programme,
The Training Programme.

1. The Water-Based Programme
This Programme was designed to develop new or existing Water Based projects
in rural Fermanagh. The Partnership welcomed projects which demonstrated
through improving access and the development or enhancement of water-based
projects or activities in an environmentally sensitive way would increase
numbers and spend in rural areas.
The following projects were successful under the Water Based Programme;
Countryside Recreation NI on behalf of CAAN were awarded
£20,500 to develop a canoe trail which will develop 55KMs starting from
Crom and finishing in Belleek.
The Outsiders Group were awarded £21,600 to purchase kayaks
and Canadian canoes for hire, rescue craft, training in canoeing and camping
holidays.
Fermanagh Lakeland Lodges was awarded £1,800 to enhance
the provision of water based and fishing activities on Lough Erne. To purchase
6 canoes.
Share Holiday Village were awarded £27,100 to extend the
sailing school in the centre, becoming a sailing school for the masses.
It is hoped that the centre can then offer the RYA training scheme to the
highest level to large no’s of individuals.
Conneen/Coonian Community Association were awarded £22,600
to improve the quality of angling of the 6 Cooneen lakes by undertaking
environmental improvements to feeder streams and gravel beds.
Erne and Melvin Enhancement Company were awarded £50,000
to develop Kesh River Enhancement with the aim of preserving and increasing
the productivity of salmonids in the Lough Erne Catchment.
Fermanagh District Council – Upper Lough McNean were awarded
£43,500 to provide open public access to upper Lough Macnean for fishing
sporting recreational and tourist activities – car park, Boat Trailer access
and Picnic area.
Killesher Community Development Association were awarded
£25,000 for minor infrastructure improvements at Benaughlin cottages in
order to facilitate coarse and game angling fishermen using the cottage.
Damien O’ Keefe was awarded £63,000 to provide 2 self-catering
chalets, access for game and coarse angling, fishing stands and 3 boats
for hire.
Michael Leonard was awarded £49,400 to provide a 4 bedroom
NITB registered Fishing Lodge with full disabled access. Project will provide
3 fishing stands at the edge of Lough Lattone.
Garrison and Lough Melvin were awarded £50,000 to enhance
spawning streams so that the unique game fish populations of Melvin will
be at sustainable levels.
Garrison and Lough Melvin - Lough Melvin River Enhancement (Stage
3) was awarded £50,000.00 to enhance spawning streams so that the
unique game fish population of Lough Melvin will be available at sustainable
levels in the future.

2. The Land-Based Programme
The Land Based Programme was designed to support initiatives that develop
new or existing land based projects and activities in Fermanagh.
The following projects were successful under the Land Based Programme;
Cycling and Walking Routes, and Interpretation
Fermanagh District Council Florencecourt off-road cycle
route was awarded £50,000 towards the development of a traffic free cycling
route through Forest Service and National Trust land at Florencecourt.
Countryside Recreation of N.I on behalf of CAAN – Off road
family cycling development at Castle Archdale as awarded £49,775 towards
the development of a cycling trail through Castle Archdale.
Fermanagh District Council –was awarded £77,000.00 to provide
Tourism Signage in rural Fermanagh.
Fermangh District Council – was awarded £113,050.00 to
upgrade the facilities at Glencunny Bridge to provide a riverside path,
picnic area, vehicle rest area and riverbank fishing facilities ass a rural
tourism facility.
Fermanagh District Council – Lough Erne Access Improvements
was awarded £68,953.50 to enhance public access amenities at four locations
in Co Fermanagh, namely Derryallen Lough lay-by, Kilmore Quay car park,
Killyfole lay-by, and Moorlough lay-by.
Fermanagh District Council (Rural Fermanagh Tourism Improvements)
was awarded £88,283.50 to enhance public access amnesties at three location
in Co. Fermanagh namely Tempo Park, Brookeborough Park and Belleek Marina
“island”.
Corralea Activity Centre – was awarded 2,430.00 to upgrade
of environmental trails at Corralea and provision of nature trails/recreational
area and orienteering map for use by customers.
FSC Derrygonnelly - Woodland and Marsh Access Improvements
was awarded £19,901 To develop ancillary tourism features at FSC namely
a boardwalk alongside the river, the creation of a raised pathway, a live
willow fence, and a small footbridge to connect the boardwalk and raised
walkway. There will also be some planting and interpretative signage.
Fermanagh District Council – Lower Lough Erne Access Improvements
This project was awarded £62,708.4 towards the improvement of a number of
public access points owned by the Council. The project proposes to upgrade
the areas at two sites (Rossigh and Muckross). The work will involve resurfacing,
erection of new picnic tables, pathways, drainage etc.
Fermanagh District Council – Devenish Island Access Amenity
Provision This project aims to upgrade the current amenity area on a site
known locally as Dead Man’s Lane. The work involved will include resurfacing,
better car park facility, erection of new picnic tables and improvement
to walls/fence. Funding awarded £25,981.45.
Fermanagh District Council - has been awarded £31,639.31
towards provision of a public access amenity at the Commons Maguirsbridge.
Equestrian projects
Ivan Bradshaw – Castle Archdale Pony Trekking Stables was
awarded £37,000.00, towards the upgrade and extension to existing stable
facilities in order to provide additional horse accommodation and to build
new changing facilities.
Motor Based Projects
Fermanagh District Council – Circuit of Ireland was awarded
£25,000 towards the improvement of existing runway and service roads at
St Angelo airports in order to meet international rally status requirements.
Fermanagh District Council – St Angelo Bitmac Sports Course
towards the provision of a bitmac motor course at St Angelo which will be
used for car, kart, motorcycle and cycling events/activities. Funding awarded
£143,000.

3. The Accommodation Programme
This Programme was designed to enhance the standard and availability of
tourist accommodation in rural Fermanagh.
The following projects were successful under the Accommodation Programme;
Upgrade Accommodation
Belle Isle Estate was awarded £17,000.00 towards the upgrade
of existing cottage to a 4*.
Heathergrove Guest House situated in Garrison was awarded
£20,000.00 towards the upgrade of existing accommodation.
Terri Catterall of Correlea Activity Centre was awarded
£3,633.00 towards the refurbishment of guest house.
Francis Morris of Coole Cottage, Belleek was awarded £6,200.00
towards a new dining facility for her guests.
Fermanagh Lakeland Lodges was awarded £20,000.00 towards
the upgrade of the facilities.
Bernie Mullally was allocated £6,807.00 towards an upgrade
of interior the Guesthouse Abocurragh House.
Monica Poole of Rossahilly House was allocated £20,000.00
towards the restoration of two bedrooms and new bathrooms of the facilities.
New Accommodation
Corralea Activity Centre was awarded £40,000.00 to construct
a new self catering chalet.
Fergal Duffy from Belleek was awarded £40,000.00 towards
the construction of a new 5 star self catering accommodation.
Fiona Theedom of Ballinamallard was awarded £40,000.00
towards the renovation of an old stone building into a self – catering facility.
Janie Crone of Letterbreen was awarded £12,450.00 towards
the refurbishment of a traditional thatched cottage into a self – catering
facility.
Jenny Kettyle of Newtownbutler was awarded £40,000.00 towards
the construction of a new 4* self-catering facility.

4. The Marketing Programme
The following projects were successful under the Marketing Programme;
Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism (FLT) - was awarded £150,000
towards a Domestic Marketing campaign for the county, including television
and editorial advertising campaigns for Fermanagh.
£32,000 was also awarded to FLT for the research of both new and existing
markets in both Great Britain and Republic of Ireland.
FLT – received £98,000 to implement to findings from the
above research.
The National Trust have been awarded £14,000,to jointly
market three premier visitor attractions, namely Castle Coole, Florncecourt
and Crom, through a focused media and advertising campaign.
Killesher Community Development Association was awarded
£40,000 to devise a visitor Servicing Strategy for their local area.
Erne Charter Boat Association was awarded £29,000 to adopt
a new marketing programme to halt the decline of the cruiser hire business
on Lough Erne.
Fermanagh District Council was awarded £100,000 towards
the marketing of local tourist attractions which include the Marble Arch
Caves, Culicagh and Lough Melvin Centre.
FSC Derrygonnelly was awarded £7,000 towards promoting
the centre and its many activities and course on both sides of the border.
Belleek and District Partnership was awarded £6,873.00,
to provide a tourist information brochure reflecting the resources, tourist
attractions and services available to the visitor.
Share received funding of £46,500 towards the employment
of a Marketing Officer; this will aid the development of a marketing strategy
for the company, which will be implemented over the next two years.
Belle Isle Estate have been awarded £46,500 towards the
promotion of the first ever Cookery School of its kind in Northern Ireland.
Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism has been awarded £36,000.00
to produce an innovative and exciting suite of visual presentations which
can be shown to visiting press, agents and operators who visit the are but
also at exhibition and presentations.

5. The Heritage and Culture Programme
This Programme was designed to improve access to heritage sites and viewpoints;
promote local cultural traditions and customs; promote craft and environmental
visitor attractions. This Programme welcomed applications that built upon
the existing heritage and cultural infrastructure and applications that
also identify new visitor products.
The following projects were successful under the Heritage and Culture
Programme;
ISCKON was award £50,000.00 towards replacing visitor toilets
with a new environmentally sustainable system.
Derrygannon Community Development Assoc. was awarded £26,838.00
towards the construction of a craft workshop.
Belcoo Historical Society was awarded £46,500.00 towards
erecting information panels, producing historical information tourist brochures
and hosting festivals.
Belcoo Historical Society was awarded £50,000.00 towards
the development of an Artisans Academy in Belcoo.
Ardess Community Development Association was awarded £50,000.00
toward the restoration of Kiliterney Deer Park Wall.

6. The Events Programme
The Events Programme was designed to develop new or existing events in rural
Fermanagh. Funding made available for water-based, land-based, cultural
and heritage events. The events had to target tourism market and the potential
of attracting out of county visitors to rural areas. This Programme welcomed
applications that increased numbers and spend in rural areas and opened
up areas to new tourism development opportunities.
The following projects were successful under the Events Programme;
Kesh Development Association was awarded £10,923.00 towards
the festival expenses and marketing.
FSC Derrygonnelly was awarded £19,940.42 towards hosting
an Environmental Fair over a 3 year period.
Fermanagh Harriers Hunt Club was awarded £27,500.00 towards
the Marketing of the Point to Point racing over a 3 year period.
Aughakillymaude International Mummers Society was awarded
£24,275.00 to stage an International Mummers Festival in Fermanagh.
Project St Patrick was awarded £29,150.00 towards a St.
Patricks day parade in Enniskillen over a 3 year period.

7. The Other and Innovative Programme
The following projects were successful under the Other and Innovative
Programme;
Ivan Bradshaw was awarded £85,000 to extend existing caravan
park by creating space for 25 additional sties and construction of toilet/shower
facilities.
Gabrielle Tottenham was awarded £82,250 to build a new
centre to cater for a number of natural healing therapies. Gabrielle will
develop a special package holiday in conjunction with her existing accommodation.
Mervyn & Allistar Duncan was awarded £150,000 to develop
a small marina and adjacent caravan site.
Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism – The ‘Fermanagh Today’ project
was awarded £40,000.00 to provide up-to-date information to visitors using
a structured database to deliver personalised information to visitors via
tourism service providers using existing PC’s.
Kesh Development Association Environmental Enhancement Project
was awarded £27,232.002 to deliver 2 elements - Kesh Celebrating Pride in
Place Initiative, Kesh Sculpture Zone/Landscaped Area and Party in the Park
- Celebration of Cultural Diversity.
Cathal and Brenda O' Dolan has been awarded £74,438.58
towards the development of a new caravan park at Belcoo.

8. The Training Programme
The following projects were successful under the Training Programme;
Fermanagh College – was awarded funding of £50,100.00 towards
tourism training in both the Irvinestown and Ballinamallard areas.
Ruthledge Job Link – was awarded £49,050.00 to undertake
a ‘Training for Trainers’ programme in Co. Fermanagh.
