Coleshill Community Association

In the Coleshill area the youth and senior citizens benefited from a grant of £13,000 from the LSP through Measure 3.1. Part of the grant was allocated towards the hosting of a summer scheme for the youth in the area and for younger children the purchase of new equipment for the Coleshill Play Park which has just been installed.

”The project has been a great success, the young people from the area where introduced to new activities during the summer scheme and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, now the younger children are benefiting from the new play-park equipment. The senior citizens group published a book of reflections which was a great achievement and also where able to hold a cross community trip which was a great opportunity for all involved.” Jill Millar, Project Promoter, Coleshill Community Association.

Garrison and Lough Melvin Community Association

Garrison and Lough Melvin Community Association was awarded £50,000 of funding under the NRRTI for phase II and III of the river enhancement scheme at Lough Melvin. The Association had identified that Lough Melvin was showing signs in a reduction in stocks of the unique Sonaghan trout and as a result a reduction in anglers fishing the Lough. As the Angling contributes greatly to the economy of Garrison, the Association applied for funding under the Natural Resource Rural Tourism Initiative for a river enhancement scheme.

This scheme involved the removal of blockages consisting of river debris to allow running fish free passage to spawning grounds. Bushes were cut to provide a proper ratio of shade and light on the streams with fencing and bush planting carried out where necessary. Groynes were constructed and gravel introduced to provide ideal spawning areas for both salmon and trout.

To date, Fisheries conservancy Board counts have shown an increase in redd numbers. Elector fishing carried out has also shown substantial increases in fry numbers. Permit sales have also increased indicating additional fishing on the Lough
